Guide to packing the perfect dopp kit!

Who says comfort zone exists only in the confines of your home? Sometimes, you could swiftly and smoothly roll over all your comforts and carry them to lands unknown. Of course, we aren’t talking of your favourite people or your home itself. But there’s one domain which is rather doable, namely, your grooming and bathroom essentials. Even if we aren’t slaves to certain toiletries, it wouldn’t hurt to have them handy at all times. Even if you are the most seasoned globetrotter, the toiletries in your hotels/ other temporary abodes might not be your preferred choice. A German named Charles Dopplet had the sharp acumen to realize this in 1919. The man was a leather craftsman and invented the “Dopp  kit”, which, not surprisingly, bears a semblance to his name. Initially made in leather, it can now be found in numerous skins including vinyl and cloth. Dopplet’s company was bought over by Samsonite in early 1970’s.These Dopp kits were then distributed to American soldiers who were fighting the world war two. Of course, civilization has progressed manifold since then, their relevance remains unchanged. They actually make for very thoughtful presents to boys moving from adolescence to adulthood. J They are also known as sponge bags in the British Isles.

The compact nature of the kit allows you to carry all your essentials in one kit rather than individual items you might have a preference for. The trick here is to buy travel sizes for all these articles (shaving items, shampoos, razors etc.) to ensure that they fit in your kit. These items would obviously owe their relevance to your needs. For instance, your needs while camping might be different from your needs while attending a formal affair. We may broadly segregate these items under three headings:

The absolute haves

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Razor
  • Shaving cream
  • Shampoo
  • Comb

The Extravagancies:

  • Razor Blades
  • Deodorant
  • Choicest Hair product
  • Moisturizer
  • Cologne
  • Aftershave
  • Chap stick
  • Mouthwash

For the real planners:

  • Sewing kit
  • Nail cutter
  • Pocket knife
  • Medicine kit
  • Medicated stick
  • Band-aids

This list would differ for everyone, depending on their personality and the nature of their trip. So long as you are not even slightly iffy about any item in the kit and can bluntly answer the question “Do I really need this item for this trip?”, you shall have, at your disposal, a homely-comely kit J

Now you have to figure out how to wisely carry this smart kit, which will depend on the mode of transport you take. You might want to check- in your travel kit containing a pocket knife for when you are flying so as to not be deemed a menace to the fellow flyers! There is no problem for of course, for when you are driving.

There is something deeply romantic about a weathered dopp kit J. Who knows, it could become one of your priceless heirlooms! One of those things your boys would have a war over!

Time to put together your Dopp kit, while we at look for more routes to park you in the dapper land. 🙂
