Do’s and Don’ts for Date Night Dressing

When you’re taking a lady out for the first time (and every time), dress like a man. There is so much talk about how women dress up for men and the idea that men are just passive consumers however, the H&S man takes notice. The H&S man is keenly aware of how elegant and stylish his lady is looking and he can’t help but show his appreciation. One way to do this, is to show that you’ve put in as much effort as your lady friend. Don’t show up at the restaurant in jeans and a t-shirt when she may have bought a new dress, got her hair done and borrowed those sexy stilettos from her roommate for the date. If you plan to be the man of her dreams, we suggest you look the part. Here are our top rules for dinner date dressing.

DO keep it simple

This is your chance to make a great first impression. Even if she doesn’t fall in love with your personality, there is something to be said for physical attraction. A first date is an opportunity to highlight your best features and create a spark that might turn into fire. You don’t want to distract her from your million dollar smile and shining personality with a Hawaiian printed shirt or garish accessories. Stick to what you know, a well fitted pair of trousers, a freshly ironed shirt and a pair of polished brogues will make a strong style statement without overwhelming your date.

DON’T be too flashy

We know it’s hard to hide your passion for the flash sometimes. I mean we’ve seen some serious disasters which may or not be limited to a diamond stud, blinged out watch, patent leather shoes and a big G or H embossed belt under a well-endowed belly. As much as you may think that women are attracted to wealth, no one wants to see your bank account stuck on your earlobe. Keep it classy and show her you’re worth more than a million bucks. Flashy accessories and big logos don’t look good at any point and especially not when you’re trying to make a good impression.

DO express yourself

If you’re out on a first date, it’s important to let your clothes reflect you personality. Luckily for women they have all kinds of options when it comes to clothing and men often feel jilted. Fear not dear friends, H&S feels your pain. This was one of the reason that we didn’t limit our collections to suits and tuxedos. We’ve got a huge range of really fun shirts, each of which is totally customizable. Pick prints and colours that you are naturally drawn to so you stand out of the crowd.

DON’T go empty handed

T minus 60 minutes till your dinner reservation. You call an Uber and direct the driver toward your date’s house, you let her know you’re en route and show up at her doorstep. How about show up at her doorstep with a bouquet of flowers, watch her light up and get major brownie points before your date has even begun? You can hear all about how chivalry is dead from females around the world but why not show her that you are one of the rare exceptions? Flowers are always a nice gesture and anything more can get too personal so don’t overthink it.

DO wear a shirt

This should actually be our number one rule. Unless you’re going for a concert or movie, there is no reason why you should show up in a v-neck and keds. Even if you feel overdressed, she will love the fact that you put in some effort. You can pair your shirt with jeans and roll up the sleeves if it just isn’t your style but honestly, a little bit can go a long way. Try to pick a printed shirt with checks or stripes, or if you’re choosing a solid colour make sure it isn’t white with black pants or she might mistake you for the waiter.

More than anything else, be confident. Not all guys like to dress up and if it’s not for you, don’t worry- be yourself but understand that she is expecting something great from the night. Go beyond her expectations starting with your sharp sense of style, witty conversation and inability to stop looking into her eyes.
